Oracle Releases Free Solaris 11.4.90 CBE Edition

Oracle has announced the release of Solaris 11.4.90 CBE (Common Build Environment), a specialized variant of the Solaris 11.4 operating system targeted towards open source software developers and personal users. The CBE edition is designed to provide easy access to the latest software versions and updates for those interested in utilizing Solaris for free. This release marks the third installment in the CBE series, with the first edition being launched in 2022.

Unlike the main builds of Solaris 11.4, which come with a license permitting free use for testing, development, and personal projects, the CBE edition stands out for its use of a continuous model for releasing new versions and its close alignment with the Solaris 11.4 SRU (Support Repository Update) edition.

The Solaris 11.4.90 CBE build includes updates to various programs, enhanced functionality, and bug fixes that were available at the time of the release. A separate iso image has been made available for download, and users also have the option to transition to using CBE after installing regular Oracle Solaris 11.4 builds. To make the switch, users simply need to connect the pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release repository in the IPS package manager and execute the “pkg update” command.

The open source code of Solaris is accessible through the GitHub repository maintained by Oracle, while individual packages can be downloaded from pkg.oracle.com. Oracle has also affirmed its commitment to continue supporting the Solaris platform until 2037.

For a comprehensive list of changes in Solaris 11.4.90 CBE, users are directed to refer to the release notes for Solaris 11.4 SRU84, SRU87, and SRU90.
