Android 16 QPR3 Unveils Desktop Mode

Google presented the third quarterly release of the open mobile platform Android 16 (QPR3). The source code associated with the new release will be placed in the Git repository of the project in the android-16.0.0_r5 branch. Firmware builds prepared for Pixel devices from 6 to 10 series. Additionally generated universal GSI (Generic System Images) assemblies suitable for different devices based on ARM64 and x86_64 architectures have been generated. In the coming months, firmware with a new version is expected for smartphones Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo and Xiaomi.

Main innovations of Android 16 QPR3 (1, 2, 3, 4):

  • Added desktop mode, activated when the device is connected to an external large screen. By analogy with the traditional desktop environment, the new mode allows you to simultaneously work with the windows of several applications, change the size of windows and use the taskbar for navigation, showing active applications and allowing you to pin shortcuts to the most frequently used programs.
  • You can connect a keyboard and mouse, and assign your own key combinations. A new desktop session is created on the external screen, while on the phone you can continue to work
