Open Quantum Computer Project Launched

The non-profit organization Open Quantum Design (OQD), founded by researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo (Canada), is developing the first open quantum computer. A working prototype of an open quantum computer is being developed as a joint project, accumulating the resources, knowledge and experience of groups of researchers from various universities, non-profit organizations and private companies specializing in developments in the field of quantum computing.

Collaborative work makes it possible to accelerate the achievement of results, promotes a diverse consideration of ways to solve problems, and allows even small teams that do not have the resources for independent research in the field of quantum systems to take part in the work. All components of the project, including the quantum computer emulator and the stack for application development, are distributed on GitHub under Apache license. The project has also created a website with documentation.

Hardware implementationof a quantum computer is at the assembly and testing stage. The schematics and project files needed to build a similar system will be opened in accordance with Open Hardware principles under a license close to Apache 2.0. The development involves the development of existing open projects in the field of quantum physics, such as the platform for conducting experiments with quantum systems
