Release Of Lutris 0.5.20 And Bottles 0.62, Platforms To Make It Easier To Run Games On Linux

Published release of the gaming platform Lutris 0.5.20, providing tools to simplify the installation, configuration and management of games on Linux. The project code is written in Python and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Ready-made assemblies are available in the format flatpak.

The project supports a directory for quickly searching and installing gaming applications, allowing you to launch games on Linux through a single interface with one click, without worrying about installing dependencies and settings. Runtime components for running games are supplied by the project and are not tied to the distribution used. Runtime is a distribution-independent set of libraries that includes components from SteamOS and Ubuntu, as well as various additional libraries.

It provides the ability to install games distributed through GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Amazon Games, Origin and Uplay. At the same time, Lutris itself acts only as an intermediary and does not sell games, so for commercial games the user must independently purchase the game from the appropriate service (free games can be launched with one click from the Lutris graphical interface).

Each game in Lutris is tied to a loading script and a handler that describes the environment for launching the game. This includes ready-made profiles with optimal settings for running games running Wine. In addition to Wine, games can be launched using game console emulators such as RetroArch, Dosbox, FS-UAE, ScummVM, MESS/MAME and Dolphin.

Among the changes in the new version:

  • To launch Windows games using UMU (Unified Launcher), Proton-GE,
an extended version of the Proton package, characterized by the use of the latest version of Wine, the use of FFmpeg in FAudio and the inclusion of additional patches that solve problems in various gaming applications.
  • When using Proton, installation of VKD3D, D3D Extras and DXVK-NVAPI, which are already provided in Proton, has been discontinued.
  • Enabled Esync and Enable Fsync settings are now transferred to Proton.
  • The DXVK-provided layer for translating Direct3D 8 to the Vulkan API has been enabled.
  • An option has been added to the Wine launch script to use the winewayland.drv driver for environments based on the Wayland protocol.
  • Buttons have been added for selecting covers, banners and icons in the game settings.
  • An option has been added to the settings for setting the file path to the BIOS for the emulator used in libretro.
  • It is possible to determine information about releases through the GOG and Itch.io services. When working with Itch.io, API access keys are used instead of credentials. Simplified work with Itcho.io collections – if there is no collection named “Lutris”, all games are shown.
