An available release of Ubuntu Sway Remix 25.04 has been launched, offering a pre-configured and ready-to-use desktop environment based on the Sway composite manager. This distribution, although unofficial, is designed for both experienced GNU/Linux users and beginners looking to explore a tiled window manager setup without the hassle of lengthy configurations. You can download the assemblies for the amd64 and arm64(Raspberry Pi) architectures from here.
The distribution environment is centered around Sway, a composite manager that utilizes the Wayland protocol and is fully compatible with the i3 window manager, Waybar panel, PCManFM-GTK3 file manager, and various utilities from the NWG-Shell project. These utilities include a desktop wallpaper manager called Azote, a full-screen application menu known as nwg-drawer, a screen-content display script program called nwg-wrapper, GTK theme, cursor and font configuration manager nwg-look, and an auto-tiling script Autotiling for window arrangement.
The distribution includes GUI programs like Firefox, Qutebrowser, Audacious, Transmission, LibreOffice, Pluma, and MATE Calc, alongside console utilities such as the Musikcube music player, MPV video player, Swayimg image viewer, Zathura PDF reader, Neovim text editor, and Ranger file manager, among others. Notably, the distribution exclusively utilizes regular deb packages, opting out of the Snap package manager, with the Firefox browser installation facilitated through the official Mozilla Team PPA repository. The distribution’s installer is based on the Calamares framework.
