The U-boot project, developing a bootloader for embedded devices, joined to the non-profit organization Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), which accumulates and redistributes sponsorship funds, as well as providing legal protection to free projects. SFC allows participants to concentrate on the development process while taking on fundraising responsibilities. SFC also becomes the owner of the project’s assets and relieves developers from personal liability in the event of litigation.
Since SFC falls under a preferential tax category, spending funds for the development of U-Boot through this organization will allow for a tax deduction when transferring donations. Projects developed with the support of SFC include BusyBox, CoreBoot, Git, Inkscape, Mercurial, OpenWrt, QEMU, Samba, Sourceware, Wine, Xorg and about a dozen other free projects.
