Pebble Watch Software Goes Open Source

Eric Migicovsky (Eric Migicovsky), founder of Pebble Technology, announced the discovery of the missing software source code Pebble Watch – all applications needed to work with Pebble smart watches can now be compiled independently from source code. Before this, about 95% of software components were open. The final link, filling the missing 5%, was the publication of the code for the mobile application for Android and iOS, as well as the libpebble3 library used in it, which provides functions for interacting with Pebble wearable devices. The mobile application code is written in Kotlin and distributed under the GPL 3.0 license.

The code for the PebbleOS operating system used on smartwatches was opened in January 2025 by Google after the acquisition of Fitbit. Since then, over a thousand changes and improvements have been made to the PebbleOS codebase with community input. Tools for developers (SDK) and the implementation of a directory for distributing applications and screen themes installed on smart watches are also open.

To avoid linking the ecosystem with one application directory, preparations have been announced for the introduction of support for subscriptions to alternative directories and providing everyone with the opportunity to create their own application directories. As an example, the directory Pebble Appstore and the interface for developers Developer Dashboard have been launched. A process has been established to maintain an independent, publicly available backup copy of all directory contents, maintained jointly with the Archive.org project.
