Raspberry Pi OS Update & Imager 2.0 Released

The Raspberry Pi project has published a new version of the distribution kit Raspberry Pi OS 2025-11-24 (Raspbian). The distribution is based on the Debian 13 package base and contains about 35 thousand packages in the repository. The desktop environment is based on the labwc composite server, using the wlroots library from the Sway project. Three assemblies have been prepared for download: a shortened one (494MB) for server systems, with a basic desktop (1.2 GB) and full with an additional set of applications (1.9 GB). Builds are available for 32- and 64-bit architectures. Additionally, an update has been created for the old edition of Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy), built on the Debian 12 package base.

Key changes:

  • Composite server labwc has been updated to branch 0.9 (previously released release 0.8), which includes new features of the library wlroots 0.19, such as the implementation of new Wayland protocols, Multi-GPU support, and the ability to explicitly synchronize buffers using DRM synchronization objects.
  • The ability to set the scaling level for screens with high pixel density (HiDPI) has been added to the screen configurator.
  • Support for vector icons has been added to the panel, file manager, and applications, which are correctly displayed on screens with any pixel density.
  • The menu editor Alacarte has been added to the main structure.
  • The Pulseaudio sound server has been removed from the package (only pipewire).
