Torvalds Crafts New PC with AMD Ryzen, Intel GPU

Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux kernel, and Linus Sebastian, author of the YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips, collaborated on a joint video. In this video, they attempted to assemble the ideal Linux PC while discussing the choice of components and delving into topics such as the development of the kernel and Torvalds’ hobbies.

For the computer build, the duo selected an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9960X CPU, an Intel Arc B580 video card, a motherboard GIGABYTE TRX50 AERO D, Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB SSD, Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6 cooler, Seasonic PRIME TX-1600 1600W 80+ Titanium power supply, and a 31.5-inch ASUS ProArt PA32QCV (6K HDR) monitor. It’s worth noting that Torvalds had previously used an AMD Ryzen Threadripper series CPU (3970x) on his workstation. The components were chosen for their seamless compatibility with standard drivers from the vanilla Linux kernel.

Key considerations in the component selection included the use of ECC memory, a potentially noiseless cooler, and the surprising choice of an Intel Arc B580 video card instead of the expected AMD Radeon series for this configuration.
