Published release of the Linux distribution Solus 4.8, which is not based on packages of other distributions and develops its own installer, package manager and configurator. Previously, the Budgie desktop was developed as part of the distribution, but now it is separated into an independent project. It was decided to develop the next branch of Solus 5 using the technologies of the AerynOS distribution. The project’s development code is distributed under the GPLv2 license; C and Vala languages are used for development. Builds with Budgie, GNOME, KDE Plasma and Xfce desktops are provided. Size of iso images 2.6-2.9 GB (x86_64).
The package manager eopkg (fork PiSi from Pardus Linux), providing familiar tools for installing/uninstalling packages, searching the repository, and managing repositories. Packages can be divided into thematic components, which in turn form categories and subcategories. For example, Firefox is classified under the network.web.browser component, which is part of the Network Applications category and the Web Applications subcategory. More than 2,000 packages are available for installation from the repository.
The distribution follows a hybrid development model, according to which major releases are periodically released that offer new technologies and significant improvements, and in the interval between major releases, the distribution is developed using a rolling model of package updates.
A player is offered for playing music in editions with Budgie and GNOME desktops Decibel, and Celluloid is used for video playback. In the KDE edition, Elisa is available for playing music, and
