KDE Plasma Mobile 6.5 Mobile Platform Available

The developers of the KDE Plasma Mobile project presented an edition of the KDE Plasma 6.5 user environment for mobile devices. Ready builds of KDE Plasma Mobile 6.5 can be downloaded from the test repository postmarketOS distribution. You can also try out KDE Plasma Mobile using the build Fedora KDE Plasma Mobile Spin.

Telephony support in Plasma Mobile is based on the phone stack ModemManager and the Telepathy communication framework. The kwin_wayland composite server is used for graphics output, and PulseAudio is used for audio processing. Mobile versions of applications are being developed in the main KDE Gear. To build the application interface, a set of components Mauikit and the Kirigami framework from the KDE Frameworks are used, which allows you to create universal interfaces suitable for smartphones, tablets and PCs.

The composition includes applications such as KDE Connect for pairing the phone with the desktop, a document viewer Okular, music player VVave, image viewers Koko and Pix, note-taking system buho, calendar planner calindori, file manager Index, application manager Discover, program for sending SMS Spacebar, address book plasma-phonebook, interface for making phone calls plasma-dialer,
browser plasma-angelfish and messenger Spectral.

Among the most noticeable changes:

  • Added the ability to run Android applications using the Waydroid toolkit, which provides integration with the container containing Android platform. Android applications can be run side-by-side with native KDE applications and placed in the application menu. Waydroid installation and image downloading from Android are controlled through the standard configurator. The ability to enable and disable the Android container has been added to the quick launch panel.
