MX Linux 25 Distribution Released

The latest version of the lightweight distribution MX Linux 25 has been released, a result of collaboration between the communities of antiX and MEPIS. This release is based on the Debian package base, incorporating enhancements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. Utilizing the sysVinit initialization system, MX Linux 25 offers tools for system configuration and deployment.

Users can now download 64-bit builds of MX Linux 25 with Xfce desktop (2.8 GB), KDE desktop (3.3 GB), or Fluxbox window manager (2.2 GB). In this release, the transition to the Debian 13 package base has been made, with updated application versions. Notably, combined iso images with both systemd and sysVinit have been discontinued, and separate iso images are now available with each initialization system.

The 32-bit builds have also been discontinued following Debian’s lead. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.12, and there are separate assemblies with advanced hardware support and kernel 6.16. Xfce 4.20 desktop continues to be included in the release, with optimizations and changes such as using engrampa archiver instead of file-roller.

Fluxbox 1.3.7 and KDE Plasma 6.3.6 have been updated in this release. Notably, KDE offers a Wayland-based session by default but also supports an X11-based session. MX graphical utilities have been shifted to the Qt 6 framework, and the mx-updater layer now supports the package manager nala.
