KaOS 2025.09 Distribution Released

Kaos 2025.09 has been released, offering a fresh KDE-based desktop experience with updated applications using QT. One of the notable design features is the vertical panel placed on the right side of the screen. Kaos is built with a focus on Arch Linux but has its own independent repository with over 1,500 packages and a range of graphic utilities. The default file system used is XFS, and the build is available for x86_64 systems with 4 GB of RAM.

Features of Kaos include:

  • UEFI support with systemd-boot for booting
  • ISOWRITER interface for writing ISO files to USB disks with verification
  • LibreOffice assembled with KF5 and QT5 VC Plugins as the default package
  • Croeso system entry tool for system configuration and application installation
  • Default use of XFS file integrity with CRC and Finobt free Inode index
  • Option to verify loaded ISO files with digital signatures
  • Launch option in Wayland mode at system login screen managed by SDDM
  • Installer (Calamares) allows automatic selection of file systems (XFS, Ext4, BTRFS, ZFS)
  • Phonon-MPV backend supporting QT 6 for sound library in KDE




The desktop components have been updated to QT 6.9.2, KDE Frameworks 6.18.0, KDE Plasma 6.4.5, and KDE Gear 08.08.1. The Kaos Plasma Midna design theme has been revamped with new icons, screensaver, and login screen design. Window decorations and color schemes have been updated as well.
