Oracle has announced the formation of a new branch of the popular Database Management System (DBMS) MySQL 9.5.0. Builds of MySQL Community Server 9.5.0 have been prepared for all major Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows distributions. In line with the release generation model introduced in 2023, MySQL 9.5 has been labeled as an “Innovation” branch. These branches are recommended for users seeking early access to new features, and are released every 3 months with support until the next major release. In the upcoming winter, an LTS (Long-Term Support) release 9.6 is planned, catering to implementations requiring stability and long-term maintenance. Following the LTS branch, a new Innovation branch will be introduced – MySQL 10.0.
Major changes in MySQL 9.5 include:
- Added the option “activate_mandatory_roles” for advanced management roles, allowing support for mandatory roles in addition to standard roles.
- The MySQL plugin Multilingual Engine now supports the ECMAScript 2025 specification for JavaScript.
- Introduction of the mysqldm utility (MySQL Diagnostic Monitor) for collecting diagnostic information to ease the analysis of problems.
- Ability to install regular and LTS editions of MySQL side by side.
- Replication parameters now include advanced security settings for encryption during all connections.
- The MySQL Thread Pool plugin enhances performance by automatically adjusting parameters based on hardware configuration.
- Changes in the behavior of the “innodb_log_writer_threads” parameter based on the active binary redo log mode.
