Core Ruby Developers Have Taken Over RubyGems GitHub Repository

Yukihiro Matsumoto (Yukihiro Matsumoto), creator of the Ruby language, announced the transfer to the management of the core team of Ruby language developers (Ruby Core Team) GitHub repository, which develops the RubyGems and Bundler tools for working with the rubygems.org package catalog.

Core development team Ruby has decided to sponsor the RubyGems and Bundler tools instead of Ruby Central to ensure long-term stability and continuity. The RubyGems and Bundler projects are noted as important elements of the Ruby ecosystem, having been shipped with the Ruby language for many years and functioning as part of the standard library. However, for historical reasons, these components were developed in a separate project on GitHub.

Ruby Central agreed with the transfer of repositories and noted that the decision reflects a shared commitment to the long-term stability and growth of the Ruby ecosystem. Further development and management of RubyGems and Bundler will be a collaboration between the Ruby Core Team, Ruby Central and the community.

The change in ownership will not affect the licensing terms of RubyGems and Bundler and will not affect the property rights of development participants. The repository will maintain the same collaborative and community-driven development process that welcomes participation from all comers.
At the same time, Ruby Central will remain the owner of the rubygems.org directory and will continue to maintain the infrastructure associated with it.

Recall that in September the management of the GitHub repository RubyGems was taken over by Ruby Central, which oversees the RubyConf and responsible for maintaining the infrastructure of the RubyGems.org service. After gaining control of the repository, RubyConf removed all external maintainers, which led to conflict in the community and the creation of an alternative package repository by former maintainers Gem Cooperative.

Some members of perceived the actions of Ruby Central as a takeover of the GitHub repository, previously controlled by the community, as a result of which access Honored people who had earned their reputation and had been maintaining RubyGems and Bundler for more than ten years lost their lives. Taking ownership of a repository of code that is used to run the RubyGems.org service was compared to assigning rights to a library of functions based on the fact that it is used in application.
