Project Furi Labs has recently announced the launch of their new smartphone, the FLX1S, which comes pre-loaded with the distribution of Furios. This distribution is based on the Debian 13 package base and features a user shell called Phosh, which is based on GNOME technologies and the GTK library. The FLX1S is now available for pre-order at a price of $550, with the first batch set to be released on October 25th, followed by shipments to customers.
The FLX1S is equipped with three switches that allow users to disable the camera, microphone, GPS, and BaseBand module at the circuit level for enhanced security and privacy. The firmware of the device ensures confidentiality by not sending telemetry data and not connecting to external servers, keeping all data stored on the user’s device without synchronization to the cloud. To handle phone calls, the device utilizes the stack ofono2mm and the GNOME Calls application.
Additionally, the FLX1S supports the launch of Android applications through a separate isolated container with Android components. These applications seamlessly integrate with the system and operate similarly to native applications included with Furios. The device also offers its own catalog for installing various Linux programs, as well as Android and Ubuntu applications.
Furthermore, the FLX1S supports multi-booting and the ability to run multiple operating systems simultaneously using virtualization powered by the KVM hypervisor. Ubuntu Touch is highlighted as an example of an alternative system that can be installed on the device, alongside Furios. All projects from Furi Labs are available on GitHub under free licenses for further development and contribution.
