In the latest release of Ubuntu operating system, version 25.10 beta, several updates and changes have been introduced across different editions including lubuntu, kubuntu, ubuntu mate, ubuntu budgie, ubuntu studio, xubuntu, ubuntukylin, ubuntu unity, edubuntu and ubuntu cinnamon.
The main changes include:
- The desktop has been updated with GNOME 49, transitioning to the use of Wayland instead of X11. This change ensures a smoother performance with X11 applications. X.org components are still available in the repository for alternative desktop environments.
- An interface for controlling Auto Automobiles has been added under Settings → Apps.
- A lightweight image viewer application called lupe is now the default, offering optimized image viewing with features like smooth transitions, visual effects, editing tools, and more using the glycin library.
- The Gnome Terminal emulator has been replaced with
/Reports, release notes, official announcements.
