After nine months of development presented the release of the system manager systemd 258. The key changes in this release include the cessation of CGROUPS V1 support and system control components in the System V-style system. Additionally, new features such as Systemd-Factory-Reset and Systemd-Pty-Forward have been introduced, along with support for loading disc images received via HTTP.
Highlights of the changes in systemd 258:
- Added the utility systemd-factory-reset to initiate or cancel the reset of settings into its original state at the next load. Two methods have been added for instant discharge and discharge during load.
- Introduced the concept of home areas (Home Area) for setting subtalogists inside the main home directory ($home), allowing users to work in different spaces. Support for home areas is currently only available in Systemd-Homed and is not accessible for complete graphic sessions.
- The Linux and RD Systemd Pull nucleus command line now includes the “Blockdev” flag for automatically loading virtual machines, containers, or images. This flag attaches the loaded image to the loopback device, enabling direct loading of disk images obtained through HTTP.
- Added the Systemd-Pty-Forward utility to create a pseudo-terminal (“PTY”) and run processes on it, redirecting output to the source terminal where it was launched.
- Removed the code providing support for CGROUPS V1 and system control components in the System V style.
- The minimum Linux kernel requirements have been raised to version 5.4 (recommended version 5.7).
- Changed the access rights to TTY/PTS devices from 0620 to 0600 to prevent recording in someone else’s terminal by users of the same group.
