OpenSuse Leap, Leap Micro Support Extended to 2 Years

The developers of the Opensuse District have recently announced an extension of up to two years of development of updates for new issues of the Opensuse LEAP and Opensuse LEAP distributions Opensuse Leap Micro. The new term of support will begin with the Opensuse Leap 16 branch, with the first release scheduled for October 1, 2025. Intermediate issues in the Opensuse LEAP 16 branch will be formed until the fall of 2031, and the final release, OpenSuse Leap 16.6, will be produced until the fall of 2033. These new releases will continue to be published once a year.

Previously, the support period in the OpenSUS was a year and a half – a year until the next release plus six months for the transition to a new version. As the first release of the new Opensuse LEAP 16 branch took longer to develop than usual, the release of Opensuse Leap 15.6 in June last year was extended for an additional 4 months (resulting in a total period of 1 year and 10 months for updates). The release of issues in Opensuse 16 will now be carried out within two full cycles of preparing new releases. For users who require more than two years of support, there is instrumentation available for migration to SUSE Linux Enterprise and SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro. This update aims to provide extended support and development for Opensuse users.
