The recent project update presented the release of the distribution aerynos 2025.08, marking the second update following the renaming of the Serpent OS project. Developed by the original team from Solus, including Aiki Dorty and Joshua Strobl, aerynos 2025.08 features its own package manager and an atomic system for system updates. The ISO image has been released (2 GB) for x86_64-V2 architecture with the GNOME desktop environment.
The distribution utilizes moss with its Stone package format and system control tools, implementing deduplication based on hard links to save disk space. Updates are performed atomically with /USR section replacement, enabling rollback in case of failure. Changes, barring the kernel and key components, are applied seamlessly without requiring reboots. The project also introduces lichen installer, boulder assembly system, summit control panel, Blsforme download manager, and moss-container container system in its development.
The distribution is currently in an alpha stage, with notable changes in the latest assembly:
- Updated graphic stack and environments including GNOME 48.4, KDE Plasma 6.4.4, SWAY 1.11, COSMIC Alpha 7, and Mesa 25.2.1.
- Integration of Waydroid 1.5.4.0.2 for interconnected and purpose-specific package management, supporting minimal and full set configurations.
- Enhanced Lichen installer now supports desktop installation using packages.
- Adaptation for virtualization environments as host-control
