A serious vulnerability has been discovered in the popular messaging app WhatsApp, which boasts an audience of over 2 billion people globally. This vulnerability allows attackers to bypass the “Single viewing” function, enabling them to view messages more than once.
The “Single viewing” feature was introduced on WhatsApp three years ago. It allows users to share photos, videos, and voice messages that are automatically deleted from the chat after the recipient has viewed them. According to META*, recipients are restricted from sending, sharing, copying, or taking screenshots of these messages.
It is worth noting that the feature only prevents screenshots on mobile devices, while desktop and web versions of WhatsApp do not support this restriction.
Research conducted by the Zengo X Research Team revealed this vulnerability.
* META and its products are considered extremist, resulting in their activities being prohibited within the Russian Federation.
