The development of a fork of X.org Server has begun under the project x11libre, aimed at cleaning the code base and continuing active development of X.org functionality. Enrico Weigelt, known for his contributions to AMD FCH GPIO, Virtio GPIO in the Linux kernel, xnest, and Xorg, created the project. In the project announcement, Enrico criticized Freedesktop.org for being controlled by Red Hat and hindering X-server development.
After creating the fork and seeking to revive work on the X-server, Enrico faced backlash from Red Hat employees. They blocked his access to Freedesktop.org’s Gitlab infrastructure, deleted his repositories, and stopped accepting changes. Enrico invited others to join the x11libre development efforts. He highlighted a backlog of changes and improvements during the project’s dormant period due to obstacles.
The first release of the X11LIBRE fork is expected to be released soon. This project will operate independently, free from corporate or activist influence, and remain neutral in its policies, aiming for inclusivity and equality. Those interested in contributing to the development of X11 are welcomed to participate in this initiative.
