Liberux Unveils Nexx Smartphone with Debian Firmware

The development of the smartphone liberux nexx is making progress, with the creators aiming to combine laptop-level hardware, privacy features, and open-source Liberuxos firmware based on Linux into one device. The smartphone has reached the stage of a working prototype, with the motherboard design finalized and debugged. Distribution of development kits for developers is planned to begin after addressing some existing issues, although the delivery date for the finished device has not yet been determined. Joint funding through Indiegogo will cover the initial production costs and market entry expenses.

The program structure will prioritize openness and flexibility, with the smartphone running on Debian GNU/Linux 13 and featuring a Gnome Shell interface designed for mobile devices. By connecting a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, users can transform the smartphone into a portable workstation with access to a full-fledged Gnome desktop environment. The device will support running Android applications in containers using technologies like Waydroid, with plans to offer five years of firmware support.

To enhance privacy, the smartphone will come equipped with three hardware switches that can disconnect power to the modem, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module, and cameras/microphone. Additionally, three other switches will disable the GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and ambient/proximity sensors simultaneously for added security.

The smartphone features a modular hardware design that allows for easy upgrades of memory, EMMC drive, modem (LTE/5G), and battery. For connectivity, the device offers two USB-C 3.1 ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, LTE/5G modem, and Wi-Fi 5/Bluetooth 5 support. Powered by an 8-core CPU Rockchip RK35888S (4 × ARM CORTEX-A76 + 4 × 4 × conce. ARM CORTEX-A55 2.4GHZ, GPU Mali G610), the smartphone is capable of running typical desktop applications smoothly.

The smartphone will come with a 6.34-inch screen, 32MP and 13MP cameras, and a 5300mAh battery. It supports up to 32GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, with an
