Comaps has just released its first issue of the project, which involves developing a fork of Organic Maps for offline navigation using the OpenStreetmap cartographic data. The issue is now available for the Android platform in APK format and efforts are being made to publish the application in catalogs like f-droid, Google Play Store, and iOS App Store. The project’s code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
The development of the fork follows principles of openness, transparency, and collaborative work. Comaps is committed to non-profit activities, being accountable to the community, and meeting the community’s needs. Key principles guiding the application’s development include offline functionality, privacy considerations (working without identification and data collection), and energy-efficient design to prolong autonomous operation.
Notable differences in the first release of Comaps compared to Organic Maps include using up-to-date OpenStreetmap data as of May 15, offering a browser-based connection to OpenStreetmap accounts, removing the translucent background in the metro card layer, replacing the metadata server with a static list of map servers, providing information on the size of local maps, improving automatic night mode switching, updating translations, and addressing cronding.
