Firefox Add-On Catalog Rules Revamped

Mozilla presented updated rules for Placing Additions in the AMO Catalog (addons.mozilla.org), which will go into effect on August 4th. One of the most significant changes is the removal of the ban on limiting access to add-ons – add-on authors can now choose to restrict access to their add-ons posted on AMO. For example, they can decide to make add-ons available only for internal use or closed user groups.

Other key changes include:

  • The terminology concerning the collection and transmission of user data has been updated. While the general principle remains the same – add-ons are only allowed to transmit data directly related to their functions with the user’s explicit consent – the term “data collection” has been replaced with “data transfer” to avoid confusion.
  • Add-on authors can now host privacy policies on external servers in addition to the AMO catalog.
  • New rules have been added regarding the use of API Userscripts, stating that they can only be used in add-ons with script managers (user script manager) specifically designed for executing scripts developed by script developers on web pages. It is prohibited to use them to alter the behavior of the script manager itself.
  • Requirements for providing initial add-on code suitable for review have been expanded. The code used in add-ons must now be included in the package with the source code, or dependencies should be loaded during assembly using official package managers.
