Non-profit organization Open 3D Foundation (O3DF) open 3d Engine 25.05 (O3DE), designed for the development of modern AAA and high-precision simulators capable of real-time operation and cinematic-level quality, has been released. The code is written in C++ and published under the Apache 2.0 license, with support for platforms including linux, windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
The source code of the O3DE engine was opened in July 2021 by Amazon, based on the code of the previously developed proprietary engine amazon lumberyard, which was built on technology licensed by Crytek in 2015. Subsequently, the development of the engine was taken over by the non-profit organization Open 3D Foundation, under the Linux Foundation. Companies such as Epic Games, Adobe, Huawei, Microsoft, Intel, and Niantic have also joined the project.
The O3DE engine includes an integrated environment for game development, an atom renderer with support for Vulkan, Metal, and DirectX 12, an enhanced 3D model editor, character animation system (Emotion FX), real-time simulation engine, and mathematical libraries utilizing SIMD instructions. It also offers tools like Script Canvas for gaming logic, along with support for LUA and Python languages.
The project features a modular architecture, allowing for more than 30 modules offered as separate libraries that can be replaced, integrated into third-party projects, or used individually. Developers have the flexibility to replace various components like graphics renderers, sound systems
