The initiative to transform gnome OS from a distribution for testers and developers of GNOME to a general use distribution, suitable for daily use by ordinary users, has entered a new phase. It was announced that night assemblies of GNOME OS are now ready for developers and advanced users. The main goal of testing is to refine the system through real-world usage of GNOME OS as the primary OS.
GNOME OS utilizes the component Systemd-sysupdate for organizing atomic system updates, and uses the Flatpak packages format for installing additional programs. The installer prototype is currently being used for installation, but does not yet include all expected features. The size of the proposed iso-image is 1.9 Gb.
In order to encourage testing of GNOME OS, a competition has been established, with the winner receiving a OnePlus 6 smartphone with firmware based on postmarketos. The winner will be determined based on the number of points accumulated, with 10 points awarded for daily use of GNOME OS on the main computer for at least 4 weeks, 1 point for each correct error message identified, 3 points for each accepted request for changes, and 5 points for each problem correction submitted in the error tracking system.
