Mozilla has recently announced the termination of the Pocket service, as explained on their official blog . Starting immediately, the Pocket application and browser extension are being removed from catalogs, and new account registrations are no longer possible. On July 8, the service will cease operations, with any unspent funds being refunded to paid subscribers. Pocket Web will only be available for exporting content. By October 8, the option to export data from Pocket will also be removed, and all accounts and associated data will be deleted.
Pocket was originally integrated into Firefox with the release of version 38.0.5 in 2015, allowing users to save pages for later reading. In 2017, Mozilla acquired Read It Later, the developer of Pocket, gaining control of the project.
The closure of Pocket is attributed to Mozilla’s shift towards prioritizing user work methods and redirecting resources to projects that align better with user needs and habits online. Features such as tab grouping and an enhanced bookmarking system in Firefox now provide built-in tools for managing reading lists.
In addition to Pocket, the FakeSpot browser extension will also be discontinued. FakeSpot utilizes a machine learning system to detect fake reviews, fraudulent ratings, sellers, and deceptive discounts on e-commerce websites. The project’s website, mobile apps, and browser extensions will be shut down by July 1, 2025. Support for Review Checker, a tool based on FakeSpot, will be discontinued in Firefox as of June 10. FakeSpot was originally developed by a company of the same name, which Mozilla acquired in 2023.
