Developers Ubuntu Linux announced changes to the composition of the upcoming release of Ubuntu Desktop 25.10, set to launch on October 9 this year. In this release, two new applications will be included by default: the terminal emulator ptyxis and the image viewer loupe, replacing the previously included Gnome Terminal and Eye of Gnome. Ptyxis and Loupe have been part of the default applications in Fedora Linux.
The Loupe viewer, which is included by default in GNOME starting from the GNOME 45 release, features a light interface optimized for quick image viewing. The glycin library is used for image rendering, with decoding carried out using Sandbox isolation and GPU acceleration for enhanced rendering. Loupe and glycin are developed in the Rust language, offering smooth transitions between images, visual effects for scaling and rotation, a side panel for properties, quick copy and delete buttons, print settings, and editing tools (caption, rotation, reflection).
The terminal emulator Ptyxis is written in the GNOME language and provides built-in capabilities for working with Toolbox, Distrobox tools, Podman, and JHBUILD. Ptyxis offers additional settings and high rendering speed using Vulkan and OpenGL for graphics. The interface supports light and dark themes, utilizes GTK 4, and includes a review mode for visual navigation of open sessions.
