GUIX Project Moves to Codeberg for Git Hosting

Project Guix, which is developing a package manager and GNU/Linux distribution based on it, recently announced the transfer of their GIT repositories from GNU Savannah to git-hosting platform Codeberg using the co-development platform Forgejo (Fork Gitea). Codeberg will also be used for patches reviewing systems and error tracking.

By June 7, all GIT repositories of the project will be migrated to Codeberg. The main repository, Guix, will be transferred on May 25, with the old repository git.savannah.gnu.org/git/guix.git remaining available as a mirror. Users of GUIX will need to update their configuration files in CHANNNELS.SCM from “git.savannah.gnu.org” to “https://codeberg.org/guix/guix.git”, with a corresponding hint displayed as “Guix Pull”.

Once the migration is complete, error reports can be submitted through the Codeberg Issues interface and patches can be sent using the Pull-Request mechanism. Support for the old system of submitting errors and patches via email will be maintained until December 31, 2025. The migration is motivated by the desire to simplify participation in the project and address issues with the outdated infrastructure, which is complex, has high entry barriers, is unreliable, labor-intensive, and poorly automated, as mentioned in this source.
