Stable Release: Squid 7 Proxy Server

The stable release of the proxy server Squid 7.1 is now available for use in production systems, marking a move from the beta versions of the 7.0.x series. Going forward, only security vulnerabilities, stability issues, and minor optimizations will be addressed in Squid 7.x, while the development of new features will be focused on the experimental branch 8.0. Users still on the previous stable branch 6.x are advised to start planning their transition to the 7.x series.

Key innovations in Squid 7 include:

  • Improvements in ACL for better handling of overlapping IP addresses and domain masks.
  • Elimination of support for the ESI (Edge Side Includes) markup language.
  • Restriction of cache manager access to HTTP only, removing the cache_object:// method.
  • Replacement of the SquDClient utility with “Curl https://host/squid-internal-mgr/menu” command.
  • Deletion of the Cachemgr.cgi Processor.
  • Transition from purge command to the HTTP method.
  • Continued support for the IDENT protocol.
  • Replacement of bass_smb_lm_auth and ntlm_smb_lm_auth handlers with NTLM_AUTH from the Samba project.
