FS Bcachefs in Linux Shifts to External Support Mode

Linus Torvalds has made a significant change to the BCACHEFS status in the Linux kernel by moving it to an “external accompaniment”. This decision, as mentioned in the note to the change, came after extensive discussions, both public and private. The new status indicates that changes for Bcachefs will no longer be accepted, but the file system will be maintained in a frozen state within the main kernel composition.

Before this decision was made, Torvalds expressed doubts about the ability of the Bcachefs developer, Kent Overstreet, to collaborate effectively with other core developers and adhere to established development protocols. As a result, any future development of bcachefs will now occur outside of the kernel code base.
