86Box 5.0 Launches With Virtual Machine Manager

Project 86Box has announced the release of version 5.0 of its computer emulator based on X86 architecture. This emulator allows users to run old operating systems and applications, starting from the IBM PC 5150 and IBM PS/2. It supports a wide range of processors from 8086 to Intel Celeron Mendocino, and the code is written in C and distributed under the GPLv2 license.

86Box offers detailed emulation of various hardware components and peripherals including video adapters, sound cards, network cards, and hard drive controllers. It supports a variety of operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 3.11/95, OS/2, BEOS, and NextStep.

A key feature of this release is the built-in virtual machine manager, enabling users to launch and configure virtual machines directly within the 86Box interface, without the need for third-party tools. Virtual machines are saved in the directory ~/.Local/Share/86Box/Virtual Machines.

The update also brings improved interface responsiveness and smooth mouse operation, particularly on high refresh rate displays. The display component has been rewritten under OpenGL 3.0, allowing for shader effects, GLSLP format support, and parameter adjustments through the GUI.

Expanded hardware emulation support includes dozens of PC models based on processors such as 8086, 286, 386, 486, and beyond. Rare devices like Atari PC 3, Dell System 333S/L, IBM PS/55 Model 5550, and Compaq Pressario 486 have been added.

Furthermore, the emulator now supports various video cards including JVGA, Yamaha V63555d, ATI VGA WONDER 1024D XL PLUS, Quantum3d Raven, and others. Sound subsystem enhancements include support for Gravis Ultrasound Max ISA, Creative Emu8000 PNP, Sound Blaster Vibra 16CL, Ensoniq Audiopci (ES1370), and more.

Other additions in this release include support for early Panasonic/Matsushita CD-ROM drives using proprietary interfaces, MDS/MDF disk image formats, dark mode for Windows, keyboard and update indicators, and flexible hotkey
