Canonical fired Tilla of Campeter (till kampeter) who is the leader of the project openprinting, which focuses on developing components to ensure printing in Linux. Till has taken over the escort of the CUPS print server after Apple lost interest in the project. He is the co-founder of Openprinting and has been supporting the project since its inception in 2001. Till has been working at Canonical since 2006, specifically in the development of a printing system for Linux.
Canonical did not provide a comment on the dismissal, but it is believed to be related to a reduction in remote employees. Tilla received messages from over 30 Canonical workers expressing surprise at the decision to let him go, as he played a significant role in maintaining the printing stack and managing packages for Ubuntu. He intends to seek financing for the project to continue its operations. This funding would allow him to work on the project as part of his job, similar to his role at Canonical. The Openprinting project is also in the process of transitioning to a category of organizations that receive funding through the Linux Foundation.
