Audacious 4.5, a lightweight music player, has been released by the Audacious project. Originally derived from the Beep Media Player (BMP) project, Audacious is a successor to the classic XMMS player. This latest release comes with two user interface options based on GTK and QT. The pre-built packages will be made available for various Linux distributions including Snap, Flatpak, PPA, as well as for Windows.
The key features of Audacious 4.5 include:
- GTK-based assembly includes a plugin for volume visualization (VU Meter).
- Added plugin to view playback history (currently only available in the QT version).
- Feature parity for the “Jump to Song” dialogue in both QT and GTK versions.
- Support for loading tags with album author information from APEV2 metadata.
- Replaygain support for tags with volume normalization information for OPUS files.
- Enhanced plugin for streaming through the Pipewire multimedia server.
- Added support for extracting lyrics from the Lrclib.net service.
- Dark design mode based on GNOME settings.
- Implementation of rendering state switches for Winamp skins.
- Inclusion of additional skins Glare and Winamp 2.9.
- Added action setting for clicking the middle button on the status icon.
- Removal of the unsupported experimental plugin Moonstone.
- Improved handling of imported playlists by creating a new list in a separate tab instead of overwriting the current one.
- FFMPEG plugin now supports AAC file format.
- Information dialogue implemented in the MPRIS plugin.
- Default Pipewire plugin for systems supporting Pipewire and Pulseaudio.
- Added support for output through the SDL3 library in the SDL plugin, alongside SDL1.
- Changed icons in the configurator.
