7-Zip 25.00 Launches for Data Compression

Igor Pavlov announced the release of the latest version of the popular archive software, 7-Zip 25.00. This project is known for developing its own format of 7z archives, utilizing compression algorithms like LZMA and LZMA2. In addition to this unique format, 7-Zip also supports packaging and unpacking of archives in various formats such as XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, and WIM. Moreover, it can unpack more than 30 different archive formats, virtual machines, and file systems including ISO, NTFS, EXT*, UDF, and more.

For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip offers a higher compression level of 2-10% compared to other popular software like PKZIP and Winzip. The project is coded in C++ and distributed under the LGPL license. The new version of 7-Zip comes with several improvements:

  • Compression rate in BZIP2 format has been increased by 15-40%.
  • Compression speed in Deflate (ZIP/GZ) has been increased by 1-3%.
  • Improved support for ZIP and CPIO archives, as well as FS FAT.
  • Enhanced performance on Windows platform with the capability to utilize more than 64 CPU cores for parallel compression operations in ZIP, 7Z, and XZ formats.
  • A previously undisclosed vulnerability, similar to the one fixed in the autumn release of 7-Zip 24.09, has been addressed in version 25.00.
