OpenSUSE Leap 16 Beta Released

OpenSuse Leap 16 Enters Beta Testing

The OpenSuse community has announced the start of beta testing for the highly anticipated OpenSuse Leap 16 distribution. This new version is built on the technology of the latest branch of the Sles 16 commercial distribution, which now utilizes the new SLFO platform (SUSE Linux Framework One), previously known as Alp (Adaptable Linux Platform). OpenSuse Leap 16 will continue to offer the classic distribution features using traditional packages. However, for users who require an updated system with minimal components for read-only mode, OpenSuse Leap Micro editions are also available. Beta testing versions are available for various architectures such as x86_64, ARM64, S390X, and PowerPC. The official release is scheduled for October 2025.

Main Features of OpenSuse Leap 16:

  • AGAMA, a new installer with a user-friendly interface, is integrated, separating the user interface from the internal components of YAST and providing a front-end for installation control through a Web interface.
  • Cockpit is used for system control instead of the traditional Yast stack, while Myrlyn is offered as an alternative to Yast Software Gui.
  • SELinux system control is enabled by default, with Apparmor support available as an option.
  • Graphic sessions based on Wayland are the default choice, while components of X.org are still included.
  • SysV initialization system support has been discontinued, with only Systemd being usable.
  • Support is limited to X86-64-V1 architecture, requiring systems with x86_64-V2 architecture, supported by processors since around 2009, featuring extensions like SSE3, SSE4_2, SSSE3, PopCNT, LAHF-SAHF, and CMPXCHG16B.
  • Updated versions of various components include Linux 6.12, Gnome 48, KDE Plasma 6.3.4, Apparmor 4.1, Gimp 3.0, and Cockpit 334.1.
  • A repository control service based on the ris protocol (repository index service) is utilized. Repositories are divided by architecture to reduce metadata size, with experimental support for parallel package loading.
