New Leader Elected for Debian Project

Andreas Till has emerged victorious in the DEBIAN project leader election, as announced in a post on the official DEBIAN website. Till was elected for the first time this year, defeating his only rival, Sruti Candran. Jonathan Carter, the incumbent leader for the past four years, did not participate in the election. The vote saw the participation of 362 developers, accounting for 36% of eligible voters, an increase from previous years.

Till, who has been actively involved in the DEBIAN project for over 25 years, is known for his work on packages and his project debian med, which focuses on optimizing the distribution for medical and biological research purposes. Apart from his development contributions, Till is also involved in mentoring and teaching new developers joining the project. With an impressive track record of maintaining 1591 packages and loading over 17,000 packages since 1998, Till stands out in the project.

The candidate who challenged Till in the election, Sruti Candran, hails from India and has been a part of the DEBIAN project since 2016. Candran maintains 198 packages, including libraries for Ruby, Node.js, GO, and various fonts. While Candran’s campaign was strong, Till’s experience and contributions ultimately secured his victory in the election.
