FEDORA LINUX 40 DISTRIBUTION RELEASED

Fedora Magazine presented the release of the distribution Fedora Linux 40. To download prepared products Fedora Workstation, Fedora Server, Fedora CoreOS, Fedora Cloud Base, Fedora IoT Edition and live ISO spins with desktop environments KDE Plasma 5, XFCE, Mate, Cinnamon, LXDE, Phosh, LXQt, Budgie, and Sway. The assemblies support architectures X86_64, Power64, and ARM64 (AARCH64). The publication of Fedora Silverblue has been delayed.

The most significant changes in Fedora Linux 40:

  • Gnome desktop in Fedora Workstation updated to version 46, introducing global search functionality, enhancing file manager and terminal emulator performance, adding experimental support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), improving fractional scaling output quality, expanding external service connectivity options, updating configurator, and enhancing the notification system. GTK now includes a new drawing engine based on the Vulkan API.
  • KDE desktop environment in Fedora updated to version 6 with Wayland protocol support. X11 protocol session support was discontinued, and the XWayland DDX server was included in the Wayland session for launching X11 applications. Factors contributing to the switch to Wayland include the transition of the X.org server to obsolescence in RHEL 9 and improvements in driver support for Wayland.
  • User distributions under the Atomic Desktops brand, combining Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Kinoite, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora IoT, have been updated collectively. New atomic assemblies Fedora Sericea and Fedora ONYX have been introduced with names like Fedora Sway Atomic
