At the end of the day, some 500 inhabitants of the commune of Saumos were evacuated to shelters in the bordering municipalities of the Temple, the Porge and Sainte-Hélène, according to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Operational Center in Gironde (Codis 33), which described the situation as “fairly virulent”.

This new claim occurs in a context of strong heat, with a monthly record recorded Monday in Bordeaux (37.5 degrees Celsius), unheard of in September since 1987, according to Météo-France. It affects a department that has experienced major fires this summer which consumed nearly 30,000 hectares, at La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras.

reinforcements from other departments

More than 300 firefighters are present in Baumos, a village located between the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, near the seaside resort of Lacanau, and the Bordeaux agglomeration. The department of Gironde also announced in the evening that it mobilized its bins between Royan (Charente-Maritime) and Verdon-sur-Mer, at the northern tip of the Médoc, to cross the estuary of the Gironde to reinforcements from Charente-Maritime. Reinforcements of Lot-et-Garonne and Dordogne are also planned, according to the sub-prefect.

Significant air resources have also been used before nightfall to fight against flames, with two Canada, two helicopters and two dash planes.

In the Landes, another smaller fire burned 45 hectares of forest in Herm, northwest of Dax, a city where a heat record for the month of September – 39 ° C – was also broken Monday.
