With “Gray Man”, Netflix takes out big artillery and is missing its target

Despite the presence of stars, Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and a colossal budget, the action film of the Russo brothers is barely the promises of a mediocre series B.

The ignorance of The Gray Man’s budget might have made these two hours of absurd violence tolerable, along which corpses and ruins accumulate. But here is a film at 200 million dollars (200 million euros), directed by specialists in superproduction, the Frères Anthony and Joe Russo, who has completed the Avengers saga for the Marvel house. By bringing this sum together (the price of around forty Himars missiles, to take another destructive commodity) of the result which appears on the screens of Netflix subscribers since July 22, we can only rehash the eternal questions again and again On the inability of the platform to generate spectacular and quality entertainment feature films.

The only issue that will keep the audience in suspense therefore does not hold the victory or the defeat of six, the hitman used by the CIA that Ryan Gosling embodies (well … it’s a big word for A character as schematic), but to the effect that the Gray Man will have on the performances of Netflix, on the market of platforms and on the stock market.

Morality and aesthetics would like the multinational of Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos was punished with this bad action. Adapted from a spy novel by Joe Russo, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the scenario takes up so worn figures that we see everything through: what will happen to the following sequence, the psychology of the characters and even the end from the film. Inevitably open, since it is a question here of providing Netflix what it is sorely lacking in terms of feature films – a franchise declining endlessly.

Eighteen years later, we find the young man, marked by the years, on a mission to Bangkok, where he must liquidate a “Very Bad Guy” (in English in the text, the dialogues are less than scintillating) On the order of a CIA hierarch, whose neat and diplomas (he comes out of Harvard) hardly inspire confidence, even if he sports the advantageous physique of Regee-Jean Page. During the mission, six realizes that he is contributing to the extermination of the group to which he belongs, baptized Sierra.
