Ban on sale of open software through Microsoft Store was canceled

Microsoft introduced changes in the conditions of use of the catalog- Microsoft Store store, in which a previously added requirement has changed, prohibiting the profit from the catalog from the sale of open software, which in the usual form spreads free of charge. The change was made after criticism from the community and the negative consequences of the change to finance many legitimate projects.

The motive for the ban on the sale of open software in Microsoft Store was the fight against fraudulent resale of the initially free applications, but the human rights organization Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) was shows that the SPO already has an effective tool for combating scammers who distribute clones of popular programs-this is the registration of trademarks and introducing a point in the rules for their use prohibiting resale Under the original name. At the same time, users retain the possibility of paid distribution of their assemblies, but should not distribute them on behalf of the main project (depending on the rules adopted by the projects, it is required to supply under a different name or adding a mark that signals that the assembly is not official).
