First release of D-Installer, new installer for OpenSUSE and SUSE

Installer developers yast used in OpenSUSE and SUSE Linux, presented the first Installation image with a new installer designed within the project d-installer and supporting the installation control via the Web interface. The prepared image is designed to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of the D-Installer and provides funds to install a continuously updated version of OpenSuse Tumbleweed . The D-Installer is still positioned as an experimental project and the first issue can be viewed as the transformation of a conceptual idea in the form of an elementary product that is already suitable for use, but requiring large refinement.

D-Installer implies a branch of the user interface from the internal components of YAST and providing the possibility of using different frontands. To install packages, check equipment, breakdowns and other functions required when installing functions, the Yast libraries continue to be used, on top of which a layer is implemented, the libraries abstracts access via the unified D-Bus interface.

For user interaction, a front end is prepared using Web technology. Fondand includes a handler that provides access to D-BUS calls via HTTP, and the web-interface is displayed. The web interface is written in JavaScript using a framework of React and components PatternFly . Service for binding an interface to D-BUS, as well as a built-in HTTP server, written in Ruby language and built using ready-made modules developed by the project CockPit , which are also used in Red Hat Web Configurators.

Installation management is carried out through the “Installation Summary” exemplary screen, which contains the preparatory settings that are made before starting the installation, such as the selection of the language and the product being installed, the disk breakdown and user management.
The main difference of the new interface from Yast is that the transition to the settings does not require the launch of individual widgets and is offered immediately.
The interface features are still limited, for example, in the product selection section, there is no possibility of controlling the installation of individual sets of programs and system roles, and in the disk section, it is only available to select a section for installation without the possibility of editing the partition table and change the FC type.
