The video begins by showing a banal control, carried out by three police officers on a man who raises his T-shirt and obediently spreads the legs. The three agents belong to the Federal Road Police (PRF), responsible for fighting road crimes and which regularly illustrates by spectacular catae of drug cargo, very often resumed and praised on the social networks of President Bolsonaro. This Wednesday, May 25, the police have just arrested Genivaldo de Jesus Santos, a black and corpulent man, on the grounds that he was driving a motorcycle without wearing a helmet.
The scene takes place in Umbauba, a city of 25,000 inhabitants in the State of the Sergipe, in the northeast of Brazil, where it is common not to wear a motorcycle helmet, the most used transport in the region. Alongside Genivaldo, we see his nephew Wallyson de Jesus, who tries to approach the police. According to his testimony, the young man alerted them to the mental disorders from which his uncle suffered. Genivaldo had a prescription on him because he was going to seek the medical treatment he has taken for twenty years against schizophrenia.
Suddenly, everything accelerates, and the ordinary control turns into drama. Genivaldo is plated on the ground, immobilized by two police officers then quickly handcuffed to the feet and hands. It is then placed in the trunk of the police car, whose tailgate is firmly held by two agents, while a third flipping a grenade of tear gas and throws it inside the trunk. The video then becomes unbearable to watch for two long minutes, which lead to death by asphyxiation of Genivaldo. We can distinctly hear onlookers around the car protest and tell the police “you will kill him”. But the latter remain imperturbable, even when Genivaldo screams in pain and his legs, out of the trunk, are violently agitated. The video ends before the trunk opened but according to the medical report made public, Genivaldo will already be transported to the hospital in Umbauba.
The video of his agony was quickly shared thousands of times on social networks and, in the evening of Wednesday, the inhabitants of Umbaauba improvised a demonstration on the place of the drama to ask in vain the detention of the three agents. The PRF simply launched them, all the more indignation and criticism.
The police “contaminated by the Bolsonarism”
