Miss Rwanda competition suspended against backdrop of sexual assault

The Miss Rwanda competition was suspended following the arrest in April of its organizer for suspicions of sexual assault, announced the Rwandan Ministry of Youth and Culture.

The competition organizer, Dieudonné Ishimwe, former 36 -year -old musician known as Prince Kid, was arrested on April 27 for “crimes related to sexual assault”, according to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB ), the state police.

A press release from the ministry published Monday May 9 indicates that “the Miss Rwanda beauty competition is suspended pending the results of the investigations” carried out against Dieudonné Ishimwe.

Director of Rwanda Inspiration Backup, the company which organizes the annual competition of Miss Rwanda, Dieudonné Ishimwe is suspected of attacks “on former participants in Miss Rwanda” on several occasions, had told AFP a Word of the RIB, Thierry Murangira, at the time of his arrest.

A week before his arrest, the organization had announced the resignation of a former Miss Rwanda from her post as director of communication after four years of collaboration. The Miss Rwanda competition, which presents itself as the most important beauty contest in East Africa, is included in the Miss World competition since 2016.
