While the news is dominated by the Russian offensive in Ukraine, the war in Syria, started in 2011, seems very far, even forgotten. However, this documentary, made in 2021 by Kamal Redouani, could not have more resonance, Russia played a vital role, both political and military, in the Syrian conflict, which made 500,000 victims and millions refugees, and in the rescue of the bachar al-Assad regime.

Former RFI journalist, already author of the French jihadist, the share of the monster in 2019, has done here the choice, very successful, to focus on four Syrian whose life has rocked during the popular uprising against The tyranny of the Assad family, which has reigned over the country for forty years. Through Khaiti’s destiny, Loubna, Marwa and Mouna draws the story of a revolution that started with songs, great dreams of freedom and social justice, was confronted with a ruthless repression machine, Finally enliring in the emergence of the Islamic State Organization (EI).

to “render” or be “hungry”

In the battle against dictatorship, and then against obscurantism, women have been in the forefront, having made feet and hands to make their demands heard and save their country. It is also they who paid the strongest price. For, as one of the female protagonists of the film, testifying to face covered, when a man comes out of prison, “In the eyes of the Syrians, it’s a hero. A woman is a whore”.

Loubna, fashion graphic designer at the beginning of the revolution, saw the children of Ghouta, located in the suburbs of Damascus, to die suffocated under the chemical attack perpetrated by Bachar al-Assad. Marwa, only 14 years old at the beginning of the uprising, became revolutionary “little by little”. She knew the state of siege in the city of Aleppo. Just like Khaiti, a student in medicine at the time, who lost his brother in the war. “Either you have to go to you or you are hungry. In both cases, you are humiliated,” says the young woman of his experience in Aleppo. Words that make shiver today, so much the concern of seeing the Russian army besiege Kiev plane on the spirits.

Finally, there is the figure of Mouna through which the spectator discovers the transformation of Syria after the rise of the EI. This young Syrian courageous dares to protest, from 2014, against the combatants of this force who kidnap the dignitaries of his city, Rakka, to install his authority. Quickly, like the other protagonists of the film, she will have to flee Syria to not fall into the hands of jihadists.
