For a few days, Kharkiv, the second city of Ukraine, is subject to bombing of an unprecedented intensity. At least twenty-five civilians have been killed since the beginning of the Russian offensive, Thursday, February 24, in this Russian-speaking city of 1.4 million inhabitants, located near Russia, 30 km away. Many buildings have been affected, including a hospital and residential neighborhoods. The administrative headquarters of the city was also destroyed by a missile shot, the March, on the symbolic place of freedom, in the heart of the city.
It was in this building that Sergei Anatolyevich worked, the head of the preferred opposition platform for life at the Kharkiv Regional Council. At the national level, the leader of this party, the Viktor Medvedtchouk oligarch, is well known: it is an intimate friend of Vladimir Putin, of which he is the unofficial representative in Ukraine.
In Kharkiv, Mr. Anatolyevitch, however, is part of his “anger” after the Russian offensive. In an interview given to the world since its anti-bomb shelter, this elected Prorusse denounces a “huge mistake of Russia” and the “war crimes” that it commits by attacking civilians. This position, unprecedented, marks a turning point and could augur from a profound change in the way precrussion in Ukraine consider Russia.
How do you react to the Russian offensive?
I am very angry. Fear turned into hatred to the Russian leaders and military who gave the order to shoot civilians. The Russian military aggression ended our formerly friendly relations. Pulling on civilians with missiles is a crime against humanity.
The Russians also bombed the public company DNVP Obiednannia Komunar. It is a single company that has completely maintained its aeronautical construction potential and which, until recently, participated in projects for space. At 1 January, it had 1,200 employees. But now Russia, which was still recently their partner, was destroying it barbarically. It’s ignoble!
We defended the economic ties with Russia and friendship with our neighbors, but with today’s aggression, they closed all the doors.
Do you understand why the Russia attacks Ukraine?
No, I do not know why. I do not understand the soldiers who support the trigger knowing that civilians will die. After all, they shoot their parents and friends! I could not believe that there would be an offensive, but it’s alas the reality. It’s a huge mistake on the part of Russia. Even today, there were bombing. Every day, peaceful people die. The children become orphans.
