Money games are gaining ground among minors

Forbidden to young people by law, they are sometimes funded by the parents themselves and constitute a public health problem.

The practice of gambling and chance increases in minors, sometimes with the “complicity” of parents, who share it with teenagers. This is the conclusion of a survey conducted by the Mutual Aid and Psychological Action Society (SEDAP) with 5,000 young people aged 15 to 17, with the support of the National Games Authority (ANJ), published Thursday, February 17th. While scratching and drawing games, sports betting, horse racing and poker are forbidden, more than a third of the young people interviewed (34.8%) declares to play at least once in the previous year the survey. Whatever their socio-cultural environment.

The health protection of minors may be presented as a public health priority, minors say they started playing at 13 and 3 months on average, often by scratching games purchased from the Balalists. The latter dominate (78.4%), in front of the drawing games (48.4%). A large quarter of young people (28.3%) gave birth to sports bets, 17.7% in horse betting and almost both poker (17.1%), slot machines (17.7%) and Other casino games also revolving around 17%.

“Have the same excitement”

By reporting these results to the entire age group, it appears that more than a quarter (27.3%) of the minors practiced scraping games, about one in six of the print games ( 16.9%) and one in ten sports betting. Sales ban? Three quarters of them know it, without it being “really perceived as an obstacle”, notes the investigation: nine out of ten players pass through a physical distribution place, even if one in two (50.1%) also uses the Internet and the online game spread.

More worrying, the proportion of “problematic” players (moderate or high risk) is “strongly increased” from 11% in 2014 to 34.8% of young people today. Concern focuses on “excessive” players (21.9%) practicing various online, legal and illegal games (slot machines or online casino games, Paris on E-Sport competitions, financial betting, poker). They are the ones who play “to redo”, sometimes by borrowing or selling a good; or who get more and more “to have the same excitement”.
