Belarus: announced number of convicts for extremism

In 2021, the courts in Belarus were convicted of more than 1.6 thousand people in the articles on extremist activities. This was told by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Andrei Swede, writes Telegram-channel BelTA.

According to the law enforcement, a total of 1.2 thousand relevant criminal cases over the past year, the courts have decided. Most of them relate to the incidents that occurred in 2020 after the end of the presidential election. These events of the Prosecutor General called the “Public Coup” attempt.

“Today on our streets is absolutely controlled, calm atmosphere,” the Swede told. He also called Belarusian security forces capable of stopping any manifestations of “extremism” and provide public order in connection with the upcoming “socially significant events.”

Earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko promised to start the transit of power through the “two or three years” after the new Constitution was adopted at the referendum. He once again swore that “will not hold power power” and announced the readiness to make a “stripping step towards democracy.”
