Nazarbayev served as president of Kazakhstan for almost 30 years and left him in March 2019. After that, he became a lifelong head of the Security Council of Kazakhstan and the chairman of the ruling party “Nur Otan”, and in his honor renamed the capital of the Republic of Astana – she was called Nur-Sultan.
January 2, protests began in Kazakhstan due to increased gas prices for cars from 60 to 120 tenge. At the same time, in addition to economic demands, participants in the shares put forward political, including Nazarbayev’s departure from politics. On January 5, the current president of the country Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev sent Nazarbayev to resign from the post of the head of the Security Council, he himself took this position and promised to rigidly fight protests.
Tokayev stressed that the decision to send Nazarbayev to resign caused by the desire to ensure the security of the country “on numerous requests of citizens” to protect their lives against the background of the unrest.
